Ringle Crouch, 55 High Street

Formerly called Hill House and Hill Farm.

Please note that The Hill, Hillside and Hill Side all refer to an area of Nash; confusingly 32-34 High Street was also called Hillside.

Mrs Hilda Evans

Ringle Crouch was burnt down in 1960, except for three outside walls. It became a pleasant modern house, still containing some very old beams etc, but was not re-thatched. It is a very light house with 21 windows. The front downstairs window has three twisted iron supports. The orchard has several very old fruit trees, still producing some fruit! There is also an old walnut tree. On the wall beside the front door there is a plaque which draws a lot of interest. The story is “that the bailiff is trying to drag away the cow, the farmer is holding on to its tail and the farmer’s wife is trying to get the last drop of milk!” There is an old pump in the garden, once the only source of water, but no longer. Entry into the side of the house is through a fine hand-wrought iron gate. The long barn still contains some of the cow byres and the food section. Outside beyond the barn are “hovels”, now used as garden shed, wood shed and holdalls.

Millennium Chronicle, 1999

This residence was a 17th century farm and the original barn and cow-byre are still in existence. A hand-made wrought iron gate is impressive. The adjoining field is the last part of the original acreage. The little plaque shows “The Bailiff trying to take away the cow, the Farmer holding on to it, and the Milkmaid trying to take the last drop of milk away!”. (Story from the late Miss Jennings.)
