English Heritage

Formerly known as “Primrose Hill”, it is a very interesting example of “cruck” construction. The “cruck” was a method of supporting the roofs of the earliest houses and barns, whereby two heavy timber members (usually suitably carved tree trunks or heavy branches) were joined at the top, spread apart at the base and braced on or against stones. By this means quite heavy roofs could be supported. This method of construction was employed in country areas well into the 15th century. This is a two bay cottage, with three pairs of crucks (the space between them being called “bays”) and it is approximately 400 years old. The “crucks” may have been removed from a previous building. The main ceiling beams above the bedrooms have almost certainly been used twice as there are joist-holes in them. Each timber is numbered i, ii, iii, iiii, v, etc. The number “iiii” is especially interesting as this manner of carving ceased at the turn of the 17th century and “iv.’ was begun!

There is very old soot on the inside of the rafters, probably caused by smoke filtering through the thatch from the central fire in the days before chimneys and fireplaces. The rafters are of split beech alternating with heavier oak ones, and there are some elder lathes. The thatch is Devon Reed, a long Wheat Straw; the cottage was rethatched in 1974 by Armstrongs of Aylesbury. The walls are classic single thickness medieval brick and provide the infill to the oak timbered structure. The fine old barn at Wood End Farm which was demolished a few years ago had similar Roman numerals on the beams. This had been built by the village carpenter, with many villagers assisting him, as was the custom in earlier days.
