The original property was built c1700 but was completely rebuilt to the original style about 1954 due to the deterioration of the original fabric of the building, (the end wall was 20 cm out of plumb, the thatched roof was letting in the rain which had rotted the roof timbers and the rest of the building was in a bad state).

The last tenant of the original house was Merrick Saunders and his father Arthur Saunders who had died a few years previously. Before that the cottage was occupied by Reuben Linney, his wife Rose and son Fred.

40 High Street and Elmcroft were, until 1956, under one ownership. They are in the area known as Town’s End and at one time there were seven occupied cottages on this site. In 1896 a Mr George Young converted what is now the corrugated iron roofed barn, the half nearest to Whaddon Road into a cart shed, and the other half into a slaughter house.

Millennium Chronicle, 1999

The charming residence was once a Butcher’s shop, about 1898. This was owned by Mr George Young, of Yew Tree Farm. The front doorway was that of the shop, and the garage was once the cart shed. Mr Ron Unwin possesses a fine memento of Mr Young in the shape of an elegant milk churn made of metal with lid and Mr Young’s name plate in shining brass; it is complete with a measure hanging on the side for scooping out the milk.
